How I Set Up My Month for Success (Even When Life Gets Messy)

How I Set Up My Month for Success (Even When Life Gets Messy)

People ask me all the time—“Why do you still use a paper planner?”
And I get it. There are apps for everything. But the real answer is:
I plan because I have to.

Life doesn’t slow down just because I forget something. And my goals?
They don’t happen by accident.

Planning helps me frame the month, set the tone, and clear mental space before the chaos rolls in. It’s not about having the prettiest spread (though I love a good sticker moment)—it’s about creating structure that holds space for my real life.

So here’s how I set myself up at the beginning of every month:

Step 1: Dump It All Out

Before I write down a single to-do, I do a brain dump. No pressure. No pretty handwriting. Just everything bouncing around in my head: bills, events, reminders, appointments, dreams, stress, goals, all of it.

Why?
Because I can’t plan what I can’t see. And the truth is, life has layers. Writing it all out gives me clarity on what’s real vs. what’s noise.

Step 2: Start With Anchors

Once I’ve cleared the mental clutter, I look at the non-negotiables:

  • Bills
  • Appointments
  • Birthdays
  • Work deadlines
  • Travel dates

Those are my anchors—the bones of the month. When I know what can’t move, I can better plan around what can shift.

This month? We’ve got:

  • Multiple birthdays
  • A few bills set to autopay (but I still write them down for visibility)
  • A weekend trip (a soft reset for my soul)
  • My therapy appointment (mental wellness always has a seat at my table)

Step 3: Define the Focus

This month’s theme for me is stewardship.
Not just financial—but emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual.

I asked myself:

  • Where can I be more intentional?
  • What habits need more consistency?
  • What goals do I keep pushing but never starting?

The answers became my monthly focus areas:

  • Wealth: No-spend periods + a side savings stash
  • Health: Appointments I’ve been avoiding + daily walks
  • Personal: Read 4 books, clear the closet, declutter the garage
  • Career: Take 3 industry courses, explore pivot options
  • Family: Plan one outing + a cousin’s trip for next year

This is the real work of planning—figuring out where your energy needs to go and mapping out a plan to honor that.

Step 4: Set Up My Success System

After the what and the why comes the how.
This part is less about stickers and more about systems.

  • Trackers for workouts, steps, and no-spend days
  • Habit loops like saving $25 every time I don’t shop
  • Reflection checkpoints: What’s working, what’s not?
  • Visual reminders—quotes, dolls, icons that motivate me

And listen, it’s not about perfection. Sometimes I miss days. Sometimes the plan shifts. But I stay grounded because the framework is there.

Why This Matters

Planning isn’t about filling boxes with tasks. It’s about creating a rhythm that supports the version of me I’m growing into.

I don’t use a planner because it’s cute.
I use it because without it—I’d drop the ball.
Because without it—I’d say yes to things that don’t serve me.
Because without it—I’d forget to put myself on the to-do list.

Looking Ahead

As I build out this month, I’m doing it with intention and flexibility. Some days are packed. Some days are soft. But every week starts with a check-in—where am I, and what do I need?

If you’re new to planning or just trying to get your footing again, start with this:

  1. Dump your thoughts on paper.
  2. Anchor your calendar with what can’t move.
  3. Choose 3–5 focus areas that align with your goals.
  4. Build small systems to support them.
  5. Give yourself grace. You’re not behind—you’re just building.

If this resonates with you, I’d love to hear how you’re setting up your month. Leave a comment, or hit reply if you’re on the email list. And if you’re not, come join me. We’re doing life on paper and making it work.
